CUSTOMER SERVICES

We require a confident, enthusiastic, intelligent and hard working person to become part of a dedicated customer services team, responsible for customer liaison within our busy sales office. The successful applicant must have a positive attitude towards customer care and an excellent telephone manner. Duties include processing orders by phone, fax and email for direct input onto a database, dealing with customer enquiries, liasing with colleagues and general admin. An RSA typing qualification would be an advantage.

Health and safety

HSE applauds lifesaver legislation Around 5,000 lives have been saved in the workplace since the 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act was introduced, according to a new report by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The 'Measuring Up.Performance Report 2006' said there were 212 work-related deaths in 2005/6, compared with 614 in 1975. However, more than 146,000 people suffered serious injuries at work in the last year.

New favourite saying "away motivation is the catalyst for action, towards motivation is the continuation of action". i.e. people will be motivated to move away from the threat of accidents, penalties etc.

Telephone hearing checks on offer

Business owners are being urged to check their own and their employees' hearing via a telephone test. Put together by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the Royal National Institute for the Deaf (RNID), the 'Breaking the Sound Barrier' campaign aims to identify whether people have suffered hearing loss or damage at work.

The confidential test lasts for five minutes and is available by calling 0845 600 5555.

Smoking ban action reminder

Businesses are being reminded that they need to produce a policy to deal with the forthcoming smoking bans in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The bans on smoking in enclosed public places come into force in Wales on 2 April, Northern Ireland on 30 April and England on 1 July. A ban was introduced in Scotland in March 2006 and in the Republic of Ireland in 2004. Law firm Mace & Jones said employers must put together a 'No smoking' policy and ensure that staff know about it. It also advised businesses to take legal advice before setting up outdoor smoking areas.

New Mobile Phone penalties announced

The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced tough new penalties for drivers caught using hand-held mobile phones. From 27 February, the fixed fine for the offence will double to £60, and drivers will also face three penalty points on their licence. The new measures are to be introduced under the Road Safety Act 2006
