Q. Why do I need traffic signs?

a. To give clear direction and important safety messages to drivers on your site. Whether regular users or just visiting your site, drivers will find traffic signs help them navigate safely.

Q. Do traffic signs work?

a. Some signs work better than others - the positioning of the signs is so important. Of course some people will always ignore speed limit signs, some will attempt to travel in the wrong direction and some will attempt to access and park in unauthorised areas.

MOT designed signage has a very proven background of development on the highway and is, in general, complied with. Signage for “off the highway” sites will be more effective if it is designed on the same principles.

Q. Do the signs need to be reflective?

a. Yes. For much of our working year the normal hours of operation means a lot of site traffic in the hours of darkness. Reflective signs will bounce back the light from an approaching vehicle’s headlights, getting the driver’s attention. In low light situations, reflective signs are 15 times brighter than standard non-reflective colours.

Q. Are they the same as the highway signs?

a. Same design principles but in many cases the signs are smaller. The size of highway signs is determined by the speed limit so signs in a 40 mph area are larger than signs in a 30 mph. Most sites are working with 5, 10, 15 and 20mph speed limits, so the signage can be designed to suit that environment. Keep the layout, fonts, text and colours the same as MOT signage and the message to the driver simple. If you own a UK approved driver’s licence, you should know what the signs mean. Back to top

Q. What shape should the signs be?

a. Circular for prohibition, think speed limits. Triangular for warning, think Give Way. Octagons, think Stop. Plates square or rectangular for information and direction.

Q. What size should the sign be?

a. Assuming speed limits of under 20 mph it depends on the distance the sign is to be seen from. 600mm down to 450mm are popular.Back to top

Q. Do I have to clean them?

a. It is good practice to wipe the signs down every 12/18 months with clean water and a splash of detergent. Most signs do not receive this level of care and still perform well.Back to top

Q. What is the difference between wall mounted and post mounted signs?

a. Sign faces are bonded to aluminium plate. Wall mounted signs are drilled and fixed on site. Post mounted signs have pre-fitted channels on the rear to strengthen the sign and accommodate the clips. Back to top

Q. What height are post-mounted signs mounted?

a. 2200mm from ground level to the underside of the sign for maximum visual impact. Also this mounting height allows people to walk safely by the sign if they are located in a pedestrian area.

For getting car drivers’ attention to street nameplates etc. mount the traffic signs at around 1000mm to the top of the sign. Back to top

Q. Can I fix them to my existing lampposts?

a. Yes, using existing posts makes sense. There is a large range of sign clips and stainless steel strapping available. Back to top

Q. How do I mount signs back to back?

a. Specify which pairs of signs are going back to back and the fixing pack will be tailor-made to suit. Back to top

Q. Do the signs need to have overhead lights?

a. No. The standard of reflectivity is so good that for site signage there is no need for lit traffic signs. Modern materials perform so well that some local authorities use unlit “keep left” bollards reducing their energy bills dramatically. Back to top

Q. What about specials?

a. Digital printing is the flexible approach. There are 1,000s of pieces of standard art work available and text can be easily set to suit your site. Remember, keep the message simple. Back to top

Q. Can I have more than one sign on a plate?

a. No problem. To stop a site looking cluttered you can have 2 or 3 sign faces combined on to one sign plate. Again digital printing makes the process simple. Coloured proofs can be e-mailed for approval and your input. Back to top

Q. How long does it take to get signs?

a. As a manufacturer, we hold vast stocks and aim to get signs despatched within a couple of days. Workloads vary from time to time so it makes sense to agree the delivery schedule in advance. Back to top
